Hair loss in men is almost universal. For some its age related thinning however, for many its extreme loss in one or more areas of the scalp. It’s time to look better, regain a more youthful appearance and return that lost confidence.
By age 50, more than half of all men have hairline recession or noticeable balding. There are many causes of hair loss in men, but male pattern baldness — androgenetic alopecia — accounts for well over 90% of all cases. Largely genetic, this condition results because hair follicles in certain areas of the scalp are more sensitive to the male hormone dihydrotesterone (DHT). Under the influence of DHT, hair growth along the hairline and crown slows and can eventually permanently stop. The process can start as early as puberty with the onset of increased levels of hormones, but even normal levels of DHT later in life can contribute to a receding hairline or expanding bald spot.
Advertised over-the-counter remedies simply don’t work well, if at all. FDA approved prescription hair loss treatments are effective, but their results reverse when you stop taking them and they’re not entirely without side effects. Only hair transplantation can permanently restore hair to areas of thinning or loss.
Traditionally hair transplantation was performed through removal of a strip of scalp from the back of the head to harvest hair follicles. While this provides the necessary hair for transplant it leaves a long scar, can alter the pattern of hair growth and result in the dreaded “hair plug/dolls hair” appearance. Unfortunately, the majority of clinics and hair centers still rely on this quick, but outdated, surgical method to churn patients through the clinic.
Dr. Beck uses the latest advancements in FUE (follicular unit extraction) to provide a more natural result. Using a minimally invasive technique, follicles for transplant are identified and harvested as individual units of one to four hairs. There is no need for large incisions and there are always sufficient donor follicles because FUE techniques can be used to harvest where traditional strip methods cannot. This increased follicle selection and precision of harvest mean only the optimal hair follicles are selected with no pain and very little to no scarring. Once healed, the harvest sites will retain their natural look and hair pattern. Better still, the transplanted follicles result in a denser and more natural looking site so they’re hard to detect even with short hair.
Hair transplantation is performed as an outpatient procedure in our office using a local anesthetic. Depending on the coverage area, the full procedure may take any where from 2.5 to 6 hours. Down time is minimal and most patients return to work in 1-2 days. New hair growth is not immediate, as the new follicles will need time to mature at their new site. However, growth proceeds over the following months, with significant improvements in density and volume within 6 months.
At your consultation Dr. Beck will personalize a hair restoration treatment for your specific features. You’ll soon be looking as young and as vigorous as you feel. You’ll have the edge of confidence that comes from knowing that your rejuvenated appearance will hold up even under close inspection.
